Week 1: June 1 - 6
Ice Castle Building Challenge! All you need is ice and salt! Use the salt to melt the ice a little so they can stick together. More information, tips, and examples of what children can learn about this challenge can be found here. What type of castle can you create? Ask an adult to take a picture of you and your ice castle, email it to Ms. Alison (alison.huey@barbertonlibrary.org), and she can share it on the website and library’s social media.
Week 2: June 8 - 13
Build Your Snack!!! Yes, you read that right - you can build a snack! Grad some toothpicks and snack foods, like apple or banana chunks, small squares of cheese, grapes, marshmallows, gummy fruit snacks, what ever you have that you like to eat. Carefully place the snack foods on the ends of the toothpicks and see if you can build a three dimensional square, or go higher and build a tower. Week 3: June 14-20
Create a Puzzle! Draw a picture or color one from a coloring book and then cut it into pieces to create a puzzle. You can also cut up the picture from a cereal box or print a picture from the internet. How else can you create a puzzle? Are you able to solve your own puzzle after cutting it up? Ask an adult to take a picture of you and your puzzle, email it to Ms. Alison (alison.huey@barbertonlibrary.org), and she can share it on the website and library’s social media.
Week 4: June 21-June 27
One Color Build! Pick your favorite color and gather supplies in that ONE color! Ideas of things to gather include: Legos, paper, markers, crayons, blocks, trucks, recycling, ect. What can you build out of items that are only one color? Ask an adult to take a picture of you and your creation, email it to Ms. Alison (alison.huey@barbertonlibrary.org), and she can share it on the website and library’s social media.
Week 5: June 28- July 4
Build a maze! While this week’s school age and tween program is a digital escape room, you can also see if you can escape a maze in real life too! The size is up to you! Will you go large scale and use tape on the floor for you to get through or small scale and make a paper plate maze for a ball? Ask an adult to take a picture of you and your maze, email it to Ms. Alison (alison.huey@barbertonlibrary.org), and she can share it on the website and library’s social media.
Week 6: July 5- 11
Build an obstacle course! Use items from around the house to create an obstacle course. This blog has gathered suggestions for making one that fits any families’ ability! Make sure you check with an adult before setting it up. Week 7: July 12-18
Build with Cardboard! What can you turn a cardboard box into? Leave it in a box shape and decorate the outside; take it apart and make something while it is flat; or make it flat and cut it apart to make a whole new shape. The options are endless! What can you create? Animal Habitat! In honor of Outback Ray’s program next week, we are having an animal themed build! Find your favorite stuffed animal and create a home for it. Try to include features that would be included if the animal was a live.
