About the Friends of theLibrary News from the Friends of the Library The Friends of the Library are happy to announce that the Mum Fest Book Sale was the most successful they’ve ever had! This success began with the hard work of the Friends, including Caroline Rafferty, who laid the groundwork for this book sale. Thanks to the help of the community, the Friends were able to sell $3125 in inventory! These profits will be used to directly support the Barberton Public Library. Thank you for your continued support! With the help of Barberton Area Community Ministries, the Library was able to provide lunches at the beginning of every class. The Food Access Program at the Barberton Farmers’ Market provided the participants with potted basil plants and tokens to shop with at the Farmers’ Market. East of Chicago Pizza donated pizza for lunch at the final class of the summer. During the school year, the Library is offering Kitchen Confidence Labs once a month. Each lab will focus on a different kitchen topic. Registration is required for each lab to ensure we have enough food and supplies for every participant, and to ensure we are aware of any food allergies. Youth can register through the Library’s online calendar or contact the Children’s Department. Stay tuned for more sessions this winter! Kitchen Confidence Kitchen Confidence is a new program the Library rolled out last summer for kids and teens ages eight to eighteen. This program provides youth with the skills and self-assurance to be comfortable making food for themselves and their families. Throughout the summer, participants worked in groups to practice what they learned, solve problems, and make new discoveries. One class involved following a recipe, measuring out ingredients, and making trail mix. Once they were done, they could eat and share their creations. Participants learned about kitchen safety, specifically food, fire, and knife safety. They were taught how to prepare ingredients on their own by creating their own salads. Knife skills were demonstrated to them by learning the different ways to slice fruits and vegetables, followed by making homemade pico de gallo. Participants learned how to plan meals, easy meals to keep on hand, and how to grow food. get ready for winter reading!
