JUNE 2012: Every Soul a Star by Wendy Mass – A great book for middle school girls & boys!
"In precisely twenty-two days and some hours from now, the sun will get erased from the sky, the planets will come out to greet us, the birds will stop singing, and a glowing halo of light will flutter like angels' wings above out heads. Except, of course, if it rains." Ally pg. 3 Every Soul a Star
The lives of three very different middle schoolers are about to collide in the middle of nowhere. Home-schooled Ally, run-way ready Bree & failing-science Jack never would have met if it hadn't been for a total solar eclipse, the first one in 75 years and the last one for another 100 years. Ally's parents bought the Moon Shadow Campground ten years ago in anticipation of the big event, and Ally loves everything about living there. Bree's scientist parents are doing research and the Moon Shadow is the perfect place, especially since Ally's parents are ready to sell it and move back to "civilization"... Ally doesn't want to leave and Bree, who has a summer job at the mall selling make-up, doesn't want to go. As the two try to figure out a way to change their parents minds a bus-load of eclipse chasers arrives at the campground, with Jack in tow as the tour leader's assistant. Actually, Jack failed science and his science teacher, and tour leader, offered this trip as an option to summer-school. Despite their grumpy attitudes towards their lives, the three, along with Ally's brother Kenny, Bree's sister Melanie and Ally & Kenny's friend Ryan, form a close friendship and make an out of this world discovery.
This unique story, written from the perspective of all three main characters, is just one of Wendy Mass's great books for middle schooler's, if you enjoy it check out 11 Birthdays, Jeremy Fink on the Meaning of Life, 13 Gifts, Heaven Looks a lot Like the Mall, or ask one of your friendly librarians to help you find others.
The world has seen a few pretty amazing astronomical events in 2012, including the Venus Transit back on June 5 ... unfortunately it was cloudy here in Barberton that day, but if it had been sunny, you may have seen something a little like this:
