Notary Service

Notary Services
The Barberton Public Library provides free notary public service for simple documents. Notary services will be available during most library hours, Monday through Saturday. While an appointment is not necessary, it is  recommended to call the Reference Department to verify that a notary is available. We are unable to notarize documents during the last 30 minutes before the Library closes.

Guidelines
Ohio law requires that the person(s) signing the document(s) to be notarized must appear in person and present proper identification. Valid forms of identification are: Current Driver’s License, State-Issued ID, US Passport, US Military ID or US Permanent Resident Card. If you are under 18, please bring a certified copy of your birth certificate or a current school ID (with photo).

Documents to be notarized must contain a Notary Public jurat or acknowledgement certificate. If the document(s) does not include this, the Notary will have to attach a certificate to the document before it can be notarized. Documents in a foreign language must have a Notary Public jurat or acknowledgement in English or an additional page will be attached. The signer must be able to communicate with the notary without a translator.

Patrons must bring their own witnesses, if witnesses are needed in addition to the notary. The Library cannot provide witnesses, and witnesses may not be solicited from staff or library patrons.

Documents requiring notarization must be unsigned. All documents must be signed in front of the notary to be valid.

The Library Agents Cannot Notarize:
- Last Will and Testaments
- Any Real Estate Transactions, including Quit Claim Deeds, Mortgages or Housing Refinancing
- Corporate Documents
- Documents with more than ten (10) pages
- Documents that require an electronic signature
- Foreign Passport or Visa applications
- I-9s, but we can sign these as authorized agents.

Notaries in the state of Ohio cannot certify vital records or documents, including birth certificates, passports, marriage certificates, death certificates, etc. Notaries can notarize a statement by the individual that the photocopy is indeed a copy of the original document. Contact the Reference Desk at 330-745-1194 ext. 1418 or 1419 with any questions.

We reserve the right to refuse notarizing documents for any reason, including reasons pertaining to Library operation.
