“Ninety minutes ago, I was getting off the school bus. An hour ago, I saw a bird that might be a black swift. And now I’m standing in a kitchen, trying to shoot ice from my hands?” Noah Grow pg. 53 The Drake Equation by Bart King
Okay, okay, I know what you’re thinking … “The main character in this book is bird watching? Boring! Like this will be any good.” But wait, did you read the part about shooting ice from his hands? Pretty cool right? Well, it gets better.
So, yes Noah, the main character is a bird watcher, in first grade he was named his schools “Birder of the Year” after identifying 27 different species in his neighborhood. Now in the seventh grade he’s still bird watching, and when he falls, well actually he jumped, into the woods one day in search of a Wood Duck, and to flee from a bully, he ends up finding a mysterious shiny disc. After some experimenting, the disc seems to give him the power to instantly freeze water. But this is only the beginning in a series of weird and unexpected events that will lead Noah and his two best friends, Jason and Jenny, on a crazy adventure filled with spicy peanut butter, a family of rare Black Swifts (a type of bird), bulldozers, a surprising run in with a Mixed Martial Artist and lots more. I don’t want to ruin it for you, but there might be aliens also!
Check out The Drake Equation by Bart King for a fun-filled sci-fi adventure, with a small side of exciting bird watching!
