Sprout Early Learning Backpacks
Thanks to a grant from the Barberton Community Foundation Youth Philanthropy Committee, children, parents and teachers now have access to Sprout Early Learning Backpacks at the Barberton Public Library.
The grant allowed the Library to purchase 20 Preschool and 11 Infant and Toddler learning backpacks. These Backpacks use a thematic approach to incorporate learning in each of the four Ohio Department of Education’s Early Learning Content Standards: Social Studies, Language Arts, Math, and Science. In addition to these areas of learning, topics also include social and emotional developmental themes. Each Backpack includes items related to the theme of the Backpack. Typically each Backpack includes: several picture books, two to three educational games or toys, an activity guide and a booklet from the Ohio Department of Education entitled: Preparing for Kindergarten Success: A Guide for Families.
The Early Learning Backpacks are a fun resource that parents, caregivers and teachers can use to promote Kindergarten readiness and literacy in preschool children. Kindergarten readiness means that a child has the skills needed to start Kindergarten and be a successful student. Literacy for preschool children means that a child has the skills to be ready to read when they enter Kindergarten. Researchers have identified key activities that encourage and develop these skills in young children. These activities include: reading, singing, writing, talking and playing with young children. The Early Learning Backpacks promote all of these activities.
The Backpacks will be available for check out in the Children’s Department. Customers may check out one backpack at a time and they will circulate for two weeks. An inventory of the Backpack will be taken each time it is returned to ensure that all the pieces are there before the next checkout.
